Il percorso del documentario si snoda attraverso le diverse epoche dalla Roma degli anni '50, al fermento culturale del '68, fino alle sperimentazioni artistiche degli anni '70. La voce degli amici, dei colleghi di Califano ed eredi del suo lascito artistico daranno vita a un racconto intimo e vero dell'uomo dietro le quinte, mentre i materiali inediti e le interviste ricostruiranno la sua vita artistica e personale. Tra testimonianze e materiali inediti esclusivi, "Nun ve trattengo" restituirà a Franco Califano ciò che gli è stato tolto: il racconto dell'uomo a 360 gradi, dietro la maschera del playboy e del viveur che è stata la sua cifra, ma che non riflette appieno la profondità e la complessità del personaggio. Il viaggio si snoderà in una lunga notte dal tramonto all’alba, in cui gli spettatori saranno condotti attraverso le strade di Roma fino alla Campania, alla scoperta dei luoghi iconici della vita del Maestro. The last recommendations, the last nods of love and fear for his actors. Then Giulia is left alone on stage, she and her characters. The film starts from this elective dialogue between the director and one of the most important actresses on the Italian scene. Giulia is a woman of the theater. Theater is her life. The film chronicles the behind-the-scenes ordeal of reading Strehler's letters, a powerful, neverbefore- used film material with which to make an intimate and profound portrait of her through the words of her master. We enter Giulia's house, for the first time, the laboratory space, where the actress prepares, where she gathers information, emotions and processes them. A house full of things from the past and present. The same one for more than forty years, in Milan. Along with the letters Giulia returns to bring to life fragments of memorable monologues referenced in the correspondence: Beckett, Shakespeare, Jouvet, Ginzburg, Brecht. In her characters, Giulia is able to embody all angles of human beings, from the kindest to the most violent. This makes her the actress capable of embodying Strehler's "theatrical humanism" and giving the audience, even today, an extraordinary stage essence. From this interweaving of rehearsals, letters, and monologues, the script of the film is being created. The house and together the Piccolo Teatro in Milan are populated with ghosts, pushing to come back to life with expressive force. Posters hang everywhere on the walls, the walls of the stage seem to come alive again, creating a film made of voices and evocative images. Footage of rehearsals never seen before thus appears. Nel 2000 Oliviero Toscani accetta l’invito di Giancarlo Politi di Flash Art a curare una sezione della prima edizione della Biennale di Tirana. Il grande fotografo presenta quattro artisti scandalosi: pornografi, jihadisti, pedofili… In realtà i quattro artisti non esistono, così come Oliviero Toscani mai si è prestato a un’operazione del genere: a ideare tutta la beffa è stato un provocatore di Cogoleto, Marco Lavagetto, che ha un lavoro ufficiale nel ramo delle pompe funebri. Lucibello ricostruisce questa storia come un gioco di scatole cinesi che svela man mano la verità, tra un finto Toscani interpretato da Bebo Storti e un vero Toscani che interviene con ironico disincanto; e quando compare il vero ideatore della beffa, chi può dirci che sia davvero lui? Tra scherzi e paradossi, la riflessione riguarda anche il fatto che critici e istituzioni ormai non hanno più alcuna capacità di certificare che cosa è arte e cosa no.
L’arte di Mario Merola è stata multimediale: canzone, teatro, cinema. Ma è soprattutto alla sceneggiata che ha legato la sua fama e la sua grandezza: un teatro dei poveri, un’arte popolare che Merola affrontava con un’adesione e un’autorevolezza totale. Solo negli anni Settanta intellettuali come Goffredo Fofi (qui intervistato insieme a tanti altri: da Nino D’Angelo a Maurizio de Giovanni, da Marisa Laurito a Valerio Caprara) si accorsero di lui: ma non per fare un esercizio di rivalutazione camp, dall’alto. Perché per capire Merola, le sue radici in una cultura e società, secolare, occorre entrare nel suo mondo. Questo fa il documentario biografico di Ferrari, dando comunque spazio anche a operazioni imprevedibili come Westmoreland Naples di Marcello Garofalo, in cui Merola affrontò il mondo di Jean Vigo, Fassbinder e Allen Ginsberg: come sempre, con una credibilità e un’umiltà straordinarie.
