Shige, an indigenous Ainu person from Shiranuka, Hokkaido, goes Marek fishing with his 10-year-old son Motoki. After praying to the gods dwelling in all things, he skillfully catches a large salmon, which he then prepares for that evening’s meal. The daily life of Shige’s family unfolds like a meticulously crafted narrative film. Rather than highlighting the struggles of the Ainu, who have long lost their territory and now their language, and have faced discrimination, Ainu Puri focuses on the strength and beauty of Shige and Motoki’s life together. Director Fukunaga Takeshi avoids exoticizing or othering the Ainu people and instead captures their journey with a natural, fluid narrative that leads to a certain conclusion. The film’s intelligent and thoughtful gaze creates intriguing shots that evoke a cinematic sense in this modern ethnographic study.
Known for her intimate films, director Kim O’Bomsawin (Call Me Human) invites viewers into the lives of Indigenous youth in this absorbing new documentary. Shot over six years, the film brings us the moving stories, dreams, and experiences of three groups of children and teens from different Indigenous nations: Atikamekw, Eeyou Cree, and Innu. In following these young people through the formative years of their childhood and right through their high school years, we witness their daily lives, their ideas, and aspirations for themselves and their communities, as well as some of the challenges they face. Notable for the complete absence of adult voices, expert commentary, and narration, the documentary allows these young people to speak confidently, insightfully, and with raw honesty and vulnerability, shaping the film themselves. The result is a captivating journey that becomes a call to action for the many voices, perspectives, and ambitions of this next generation to be heard.
At the Kyrgyzstan-Kazakhstan border, Aza and Samat work as members of a drug trafficking organization. One day, they run into Nazik, who has narrowly escaped from human traffickers. Aza decides to give up the drug money and save Nazik, but Nazik tragically dies while crossing a river. Aza is determined to at least return Nazik’s remains to her homeland, but his decision thrusts him into even greater danger. The border regions of Central Asian countries, that are located adjacent to Afghanistan where massive amounts of drugs are produced, are hotspots for drug trafficking and organized crime. As those desperate for survival struggle to maintain a shred of dignity, the camera frequently pulls back to capture the vast and indifferent mountainous landscapes of the borderlands. The film is genre-driven but is also captivating with its restrained dialogue and composed visuals.
Living a life tied to an old, worn-down house, Nidhi makes a phone call to her childhood self. “You are me,” she says. In the film, the protagonist moves through the house, capturing sounds with a boom mic and transmitting her words back to the past. In the place full of spirits, the interplay between past and present is expressed through sounds. Nidhi’s childhood memories are stained with the absence of her father and her mother’s depression, and now, as an adult, she finds herself sinking into the same deep depression her mother once experienced. Poetically portraying a woman’s inner world, this film presents a mother-daughter relationship tangled in love and resentment, all seeming to merge into a single character—the narrator. In the final scene, as Nidhi finally steps out of the house, the camera, which had been confined to the dark interior of the house, captures a ghostly gaze moving across an open space, layering the scene with deeper meaning.
