Woman, life, freedom! After the death of a young Iranian woman in Teheran, thousands take to the streets – in Germany too. Portrait of a protest which brought different generations together. On 13th September 2022, Jina Mahsa Amini was arrested by the Iranian vice squad because she was wearing her headscarf wrongly. Three days later, she died in custody. Her death set off a howl of protest all over the world. Many exiled Iranians, who fled the new regime in Tehran in the 1970s, protested – but also 2nd generation German-Iranians like Jasmin Shakeri, Pegah Ferydoni, Natalie Amiri and Enissa Amani. Together they took to the streets to help the old country find freedom.

Since their formation in 1985, Element of Crime have been a constant in the German musical firmament. They’re seen as the best-known unknown or the least-known well-known band in the German-speaking world. What sort of people are they? How did they become what they are? Director Charly Hübner follows the four musicians on a tour of Berlin, specially put together for the film – to places that represent particular waystations in the band’s development. Never nostalgic, never »the good old days«. Element of Crime are far too alive for that.

Her father was arrested by the Gestapo in May 1933, her mother died early, and her sister Irma fell victim to the Nazis’ »euthanasia« murder program. In conversation with Antje Kosemund, born in 1928, people, places, streets and buildings appear. They all tell their stories of the communist resistance against National Socialism in Hamburg, of a trace in the extermination program of Aktion T4, which leads to Vienna. Kosemund’s memories are testimony to a life of resistance. A document against forgetting.

Campbell portrays a student who seeks to complete her thesis on Parlow by organizing a public performance of “Opus 28” from Toronto to Oslo. The cast includes Dueñas, Melanie Scheiner, Eve Duranceau, Maxim Gaudette, Rosa-Johan Uddoh, and Eileen Davies.
