In 1904, there was a case that shook Switzerland: Frieda Keller was sentenced to death. A former victim of rape, the 25-year-old seamstress killed her son Ernstli, whose Father was her attacker, and buried the five-year-old’s body in the forest. Shortly afterwards, the body was found, and the woman – a distraught mother, victim and perpetrator all at once – confessed to the crime. In addition to the authorities and her own Family, the misogynistic laws of that time were also stacked against her. Despite fierce protests from the populace, Frieda was first sentenced to death at the end of a public trial in St Gall in front of hundreds of onlookers, and was subsequently “pardoned” with a life sentence in solitary confinement. Not only was the bigoted pardon a disgrace, but the Fact that her rapist, the married man Carl Zimmerli, was never brought to justice was shameful. Indeed, the law at the time protected married men who assaulted women. The spectacular case raises the question of how much of a victim there is in the perpetrator. It significantly influenced debates on women's rights and a Fairer society, as well as the development of the criminal justice system in Switzerland.
Taesan and Dongju are a long-time couple. As they prepare to move, they find an old soFa on the street and bring it home. Their cramped apartment, now filled with the soFa, the couple preparing for their move, and their dreams, are depicted with an air of detachment. The film captures their emotions with a unique rhythm, floating in the air.
Jem Cohen brings the same meditative elegance and intellectual curiosity he did to Museum Hours (2012) with his stargazing new feature, again using the cinematic form to patiently interrogate ways of seeing and being. The principal subject of Cohen’s film is an Austrian astronomer named Karl who has been re-evaluating his work and life after turning 70, and who travels to a mountaintop on a Greek island in search of the darkest sky against which to view the cosmos. Yet the real matter of the singular Little, Big, and Far—whose title refers to the three concepts Karl and his physicist wife believe are at the core of their work—is as vast as the universe itself, a reckoning with scientific truth at a moment of humanity’s existential crisis.
The Face of Hwanhee is the second feature film by director Lee Jeahan, who previously directed the tender and delicate debut film, Sophie’s World (2021). Composed of four chapters— House of a writer, The Visitors, To the never never land, and The Face of Hwanhee—the film unfolds like a collection of short stories, and can be experienced as such. In this narrative, Hwanhee is neither anyone nor nobody. The four stories, which feature a student visiting a teacher, an unwelcome guest at a restaurant, a man contemplating studying abroad and his girlfriend and his mother, and a novelist and a reader, each contain stories within stories. They traverse freely between night and day, Fact and truth, narrative and image, within and outside the frame, dream and reality, actors and characters, the singular and the plural, and chance and Fate, stimulating all the senses. The Face of Hwanhee presents four curious adventures of Hwanhee and Hwanhee’s neighbors, where structure creates mood and mood shapes the world, making for a Fascinating journey.
Known for her intimate films, director Kim O’Bomsawin (Call Me Human) invites viewers into the lives of Indigenous youth in this absorbing new documentary. Shot over six years, the film brings us the moving stories, dreams, and experiences of three groups of children and teens from different Indigenous nations: Atikamekw, Eeyou Cree, and Innu. In following these young people through the formative years of their childhood and right through their high school years, we witness their daily lives, their ideas, and aspirations for themselves and their communities, as well as some of the challenges they Face. Notable for the complete absence of adult voices, expert commentary, and narration, the documentary allows these young people to speak confidently, insightfully, and with raw honesty and vulnerability, shaping the film themselves. The result is a captivating journey that becomes a call to action for the many voices, perspectives, and ambitions of this next generation to be heard.
Su-yeon stands in a dark alley and swipes ‘like’ on a dating app. She meets a man, drinks with him, and then they go to a motel. She is a romance novelist. One day, a senior colleague visits Su-yeon and asks her to join in filing a sexual assault complaint against a professor who taught them ten years ago. Su-yeon’s reaction is unexpected. Around that time, Su-yeon starts to feel a subtle connection with a young female editor at a publishing house. What kind of experiences will Su-yeon go through? Journey to Face Them breaks almost all the conventions of recent Korean independent films dealing with the themes of sexual violence and its aftermath. The film reveals the complex and subtle chains of emotions in a delicate yet bold manner. Through a provocative narrative that repeatedly pauses, resumes, and leaps forward, it painfully captures the unfinished nature of the incident and the emotions tied to it.

The three meet again on a summer’s day to clear out their Family home before putting it on the market. While they sort through the things, one sister comes across a mysterious photo of a young man, whose memory still haunts her today. It seems to have been taken outside the house on the day of his Fatal accident. As she can’t remember taking the picture, she starts researching and at some point she is sure that the photographer was someone else. Layer by layer, she uncovers a past that contains a bitter truth.
