Jamal Hindawi (50), Palestinian, lives with his family in Shatila camp in Beirut, where he makes political theatre. He is currently working on a play that tells the story of an old jacket that symbolises the Palestinian identity. But the evening before the premiere, Jamal loses the theatre prop. He starts a nightly journey through the streets of Beirut and is confronted with a city in radical transition.
After a successful date, a young man races against time to rid his apartment of a dark secret.

There are four characters: Jeong-ho, Su-jin, In-ju, and Yu-jeong. They are all involved in the arts. Jeong-ho and Su-jin are lovers, but Su-jin is seeing another man without Jeong-ho’s knowledge. In-ju has a crush on Jeong-ho and wants to confess it to him. Yu-jeong also has her own story. The film calmly develops each of their stories until the middle. After the midpoint, it seeks a significant structural change. In this film, time no longer flows in order. Merely Known as SometHing Else is the second feature by director Jo Heeyoung, who debuted with The Continuing Land (2022). The film features characters crossing paths in the same space without knowing each other, time from today and yesterday intervening in each other’s dimensions, which makes the distinction between fact and truth ambiguous. The solid cinematography is excellent, and the virtue of the film lies in its attempt at a complex, multi-dimensional structure, which enhances the emotional resonance rather than the narrative.

Seo-jun, a young pianist from an underprivileged background, manages to study classical piano with the aid of a scholarship with the help of renowned pianist Eun-jung Son. His goal is to win an international competition but he is repeatedly defeated by his rival, Min-jae. After failing to win, out of frustration, he vandalizes in the waiting room. Ji-soo witnesses his misdemeanor and blackmails him to manipulate him. Seo-jun and Jisoo develop a romantic relationship and he finds out that she plays jazz piano. He became passionate about jazz piano as well, performing in jazz clubs, and distracted from classical piano. Eun-jung discovers his behavior and disapproves of it, and thus considers cutting the scholarship off him. Seo-jun gets one last chance to compete in a competition before his military enlistment but learns that Min-jae is also participating. Can Seo-jun prove his worth and forge his path as a pianist?
