Merve is a former athlete living on the Anatolian side of Istanbul, making a living by selling performance-enhancing drugs. Upon receiving the news of her father’s death in Belgium, she finds herself faced with a choice between two continents. This decision will also lead to losing one of the two people she loves. Will she choose her sister who dreams of a life abroad or the athlete she is in love with? The “unKnown continent” in the title is of course the western Eldorado the characters contemplate. It’s also an emotional state, where borders separate not only countries but also conflicted feelings, right and wrong. The director films a sensitive and truthful portrait of sisterhood and friendship, thanks to restrained but strong performances and clever writing: the sport background of Merve is an apt metaphor for her future trials – a leap into the unKnown for which she needs to prepare her momentum. And leave a weight behind.
There are four characters: Jeong-ho, Su-jin, In-ju, and Yu-jeong. They are all involved in the arts. Jeong-ho and Su-jin are lovers, but Su-jin is seeing another man without Jeong-ho’s Knowledge. In-ju has a crush on Jeong-ho and wants to confess it to him. Yu-jeong also has her own story. The film calmly develops each of their stories until the middle. After the midpoint, it seeks a significant structural change. In this film, time no longer flows in order. Merely Known as Something Else is the second feature by director Jo Heeyoung, who debuted with The Continuing Land (2022). The film features characters crossing paths in the same space without Knowing each other, time from today and yesterday intervening in each other’s dimensions, which makes the distinction between fact and truth ambiguous. The solid cinematography is excellent, and the virtue of the film lies in its attempt at a complex, multi-dimensional structure, which enhances the emotional resonance rather than the narrative.

On October 29, 2022, the neon-lit streets of Itaewon were illuminated by the red glow of dozens of ambulances. Even before the victims' funerals were completed, a peculiar memorial altar appeared in front of Seoul City Hall, composed entirely of pure white chrysanthemums and a plaque that read, "Deceased in the Itaewon Accident." In defiance of this hollow memorial, which seemed to promote forgetfulness rather than mourning, the families of the victims donned bright red shawls and took to the snowy white streets of Itaewon. The film explores the attempts, changes, frustrations, and solidarity that have emerged in the aftermath. For us, the Itaewon tragedy is far from over.

In short, do not shy away from this opportunity to show a Christmas Special to your children in favour of the usual fare from Disney and co. Rather, pop a fresh batch of pop corn, get first dibs on the comfy chair and opt for what was arguably one of the highlights of East German children's programming.
