EXpansion is a visual investigation of proliferation, growth through repetition and accumulation. Continuous eXpansion and endless repetition are permanent fiXtures of contemporary life, and this video utilizes found footage and 3D software to play with loops, repetition, and nightmarish visions of replication. Inky digital blemishes bleed into the visual collages, and wash away the image as the eXpanding “carchitecture” inevitably collapses.
Why did cinema lag behind for so long in terms of morals? Why did this new art form, created to depict the modern world, find itself a prisoner of moralist and Puritan ideals? Over just fifty one minutes, this densely-packed documentary brings to light the traces of a different gaze, from the films of Thomas Alva Edison to contemporary cinema. From censorship to fragile tolerance, it tells the story of an uncertain war.

Like many teenagers, I sometimes thought that this device was a bit like the little bathroom mirror I use to eXplore myself. Then I came to wonder if this phone wasn’t much closer, not in front of me, but in my body.
Old photos live in a boX, each with a good tale attached. But the memories that surface are another story. And these have to go. Sometimes you find yourself doing things that seem too familiar, things you swore you would never do. Maybe you feel compelled to break the cycle, to “stop the insanity,” as a friend calls it. Making The BoX is part of that process for me. As such, it is a personal archive documentary dealing with memory, inter-generational trauma, grief and hope.
