Recording engineer Seong-hyeon is troubled by a request for post-production dubbing. The leading actress, Mi-jeong, has passed away, and no one knows the content of the ad-libs she performed in a crucial scene of the film. Minor actress Min-young visits Seong-hyeon’s studio to record Mi-jeong’s lines, but the director who was supposed to come is nowhere to be found. Humming stimulates a sense of mystery and imagination against the backdrop of a secluded hill and a shabby recording studio. The film intertwines conversations between Seong-hyeon and Min-young, Seong-hyeon’s memories of the deceased Mi-jeong, and scenes from the film Seong-hyeon and Mi-jeong worked on together, placing itself at an angle between reality and cinema, life and death. it unfolds like a languid and bizarre midday farce or a chilling and sorrowful ghost story, gently touching upon the secretive and significant moments of the world.
Hong has many circumstances tied to poverty, leading to numerous secrets and misunderstandings. Even as she moves her mother, who is in the early stages of dementia, from a remote nursing home to her small single room, what Hong truly desires isn’t her mother, but her mother’s bank account. Her past relationship is marred by unpaid debts and harsh words, and the new one she’s just begun is precariously adorned with lies in an attempt to make it work. Meanwhile, her dreams remain distant, and her youth slowly fades away. Jang Sun, who won the Actor of the Year at the 20th BiFF, delivers a sensitive performance that turns Hong into something of a mystery. Trapped between relentless misfortune and a desperate grasp for happiness, Hong is a character who is clueless and difficult to decipher. Red Nails shakes the audience’s emotions with its persistent and chilling portrayal of its characters and relationships.

As is well known, the “National Security Law” was enacted in 1949, and the “Anti-Communist Law” in 1961, giving South Korea’s anti-communist ideology unprecedented regulatory power. Director Kim Mooyoung pays attention to the anti-communist films produced during the era when the Anti-Communist Law was enforced, as well as the films that were re-edited and released due to censorship, contemplating the capacity and status of images. At the same time, he densely layers scenes of extensive archival footage with historical value, architecture embedded with anti-communist ideology, and tragic places and faces swept up in anti-communist movements, creating tension between the content of the first-person voiceover narration and the images. in doing so, he reconstructs the history that the country sought to conceal. After watching The Sense of Violence, viewers will realize that the opening narration —“The voice gropes the memory of the image. Now, i will try to remember the image by following the voice.” — was the film’s earnest methodology.

There are four characters: Jeong-ho, Su-jin, in-ju, and Yu-jeong. They are all involved in the arts. Jeong-ho and Su-jin are lovers, but Su-jin is seeing another man without Jeong-ho’s knowledge. in-ju has a crush on Jeong-ho and wants to confess it to him. Yu-jeong also has her own story. The film calmly develops each of their stories until the middle. After the midpoint, it seeks a significant structural change. in this film, time no longer flows in order. Merely Known as Something Else is the second feature by director Jo Heeyoung, who debuted with The Continuing Land (2022). The film features characters crossing paths in the same space without knowing each other, time from today and yesterday intervening in each other’s dimensions, which makes the distinction between fact and truth ambiguous. The solid cinematography is excellent, and the virtue of the film lies in its attempt at a complex, multi-dimensional structure, which enhances the emotional resonance rather than the narrative.
