The tropical hall of a zoo is altered by an encounter between a woman and the crocodile keeper. While observing and being observed by crocodiles, they talk about family memories with reptiles, ghosts, and the history of the zoo. After arriving in Germany, Colombia-born director Jazmin Rojas Forero visited the “jungle” of the Düsseldorf zoo, experiencing, as said in the film, “the uncomfortable feeling of being at home”. She creates a fascinating space to reflect on displacement without any crocodile tears, a lush landscape where memories and senses blur into intriguing perspectives. In this cradle of leaves, water and scales, one can become a cold-blooded animal or even a zoo – a metaphor for our own condition where instincts are studied and preserved, displayed and tamed.

SleEP TALKING is an absurdist comedy-drama that explores where our minds go when we can't fall asleep. It follows DAVID, a tired 20-something experiencing a sleepless night. He meanders into an office space—the metaphorical representation of his mind—and spends the night on menial tasks to uncover why he is unable to sleep.
As is well known, the “National Security Law” was enacted in 1949, and the “Anti-Communist Law” in 1961, giving South Korea’s anti-communist ideology unprecedented regulatory power. Director Kim Mooyoung pays attention to the anti-communist films produced during the era when the Anti-Communist Law was enforced, as well as the films that were re-edited and released due to censorship, contemplating the capacity and status of images. At the same time, he densely layers scenes of extensive archival footage with historical value, architecture embedded with anti-communist ideology, and tragic places and faces swept up in anti-communist movements, creating tension between the content of the first-person voiceover narration and the images. In doing so, he reconstructs the history that the country sought to conceal. After watching The Sense of Violence, viewers will realize that the opening narration —“The voice gropes the memory of the image. Now, I will try to remember the image by following the voice.” — was the film’s earnest methodology.

In 1904, there was a case that shook Switzerland: Frieda Keller was sentenced to death. A former victim of rape, the 25-year-old seamstress killed her son Ernstli, whose father was her attacker, and buried the five-year-old’s body in the forest. Shortly afterwards, the body was found, and the woman – a distraught mother, victim and perpetrator all at once – confessed to the crime. In addition to the authorities and her own family, the misogynistic laws of that time were also stacked against her. Despite fierce protests from the populace, Frieda was first sentenced to death at the end of a public trial in St Gall in front of hundreds of onlookers, and was subsequently “pardoned” with a life sentence in solitary confinement. Not only was the bigoted pardon a disgrace, but the fact that her rapist, the married man Carl Zimmerli, was never brought to justice was shameful. Indeed, the law at the time protected married men who assaulted women. The spectacular case raises the question of how much of a victim there is in the perpetrator. It significantly influenced debates on women's rights and a fairer society, as well as the development of the criminal justice system in Switzerland.
