The practices of Germans Ermičs and Artis Nīmanis differ, so do the matErials they use, yet both are among the most internationally acclaimed Latvian designers. What unites them is their dedication to matEriality, though they each follow different personal and creative paths. Ermičs’ “magic of matErial and colour” emerges from glass, marble, and metal – he moves freely between the Netherlands, Latvia, and Portugal, as well as between the disciplines of design and visual art. Meanwhile in Latvia, under the brand “an&angel” Nīmanis deconstructs the concept of glass – in each of his pieces, he breathes a sense of the presence of nature.

10.0分 The film does look set to be incredibly personal: when Elisa realises that the film she’s been working on for years is dead, it impacts everything in her life, including her faith. She wanted to talk about her conversion to Catholicism, but maybe she wasn’t enough of a believer? "In God or in the film?", we ask ourselves, but not even she can answer this question. When faced with failure, all she’s ever been able to do is lose herself. "Because you’re tedious and you don’t know how to look after other people", the Madonna tells her the first time they speak, desacralizing her crisis and inciting her to react. As a result, Elisa, her sister, her screenwriter and the failed film’s lead actor set off on a journey on board a ship, headed for a sanctuary which they know little to nothing about. Each of them has something to resolve, a knot to untie, much like all the other pilgrims on the boat.

Gabriella intersects with Elia (Gianniotti) who is the same age as her oldest son and exerts an irresistible power of attraction on her. At the Kyrgyzstan-Kazakhstan border, Aza and Samat work as members of a drug trafficking organization. One day, they run into Nazik, who has narrowly escaped from human traffickers. Aza decides to give up the drug money and save Nazik, but Nazik tragically dies while crossing a river. Aza is determined to at least return Nazik’s remains to her homeland, but his decision thrusts him into even greater danger. The border regions of Central Asian countries, that are located adjacent to Afghanistan where massive amounts of drugs are produced, are hotspots for drug trafficking and organized crime. As those desperate for survival struggle to maintain a shred of dignity, the camera frequently pulls back to capture the vast and indifferent mountainous landscapes of the borderlands. The film is genre-driven but is also captivating with its restrained dialogue and composed visuals.
