At Christine's funeral, her foster son suddenly shows up, a grown-up man with whom the family has been out of contact for quite some time. He brought a letter, stating that Christine wants to be buried in Wentelen, to the bewilderment of her biological children, and even more so to that of her husband. In addition to that, all the relatives are surprised that the foster son of Christine apparently maintained a correspondence with Christine. Nevertheless, Christine's last wish is respected, and they decided to bury her in Wentelen, and wish to do so traditionally, meaning: walking behind the hearse. During a walk of several days, all the relatives (foster sisters, foster father, alleged friends and real ones, the foster son, lovers) have enough time to get to know each other better. Because in the end they have no other conclusion than that nobody really knew anyone. Old intrigues are dug up, the foster sisters finally learn why the foster brother just disappeared from the family, and they can begin to develop a real image of the mother. Once Christine's final resting place is reached and she is buried, all family ties, good and bad, are shaken around.

COMMENTARY The exuberant crowdfunder, played by Rocco Papaleo, scoots around Palmi on his Ape, tossing flyers and wheedling signatures. In this romantic/sports comedy by the Manetti Bros, set in Palmi, with scenes in Milan and Paris, sports and personalities collide, with characters and their loyalties, flaws, and a zest for getting even who all coalesce in the end and reestablish a balance. DIRECTOR'S STATEMENT Palmi is the town where our mother is from and where we have spent so much time; we really feel we belong there, for better and for worse. As well as a film about sports, we wanted to capture the soul and the identity of Palmi, which is part of a region, Calabria, that has always been depicted very differently than it is here. What we’ve done is simply make a film about what we have seen with our own eyes and what we’ve experienced. Without straining to reach the unattainable “objectivity”, which likely doesn’t exit. The result is a comedy with a light touch, a tender fairy tale, an exuberant take on sports that, to our surprise, turned out to be our most personal film yet.

At the improvised stops of a migrant camp, I film the paltry shelters of nationals from Mexico, Central America, Pakistan and China. Making campfires with a few scattered desert shrubs, caught between worry and despair, they are waiting to be picked up. Through the glimmering haze I can make out their blank gazes staring into the void, their faces burdened with fatigue, sweat and dust. The calming effect produced by the volunteers who distributed water, food and blankets a short time ago is fading fast. By dawn tomorrow, the camp will be gone, the desert deserted, the crossing already in the past. In the light of dusk it is still possible to glimpse places strewn with disparate objects and abandoned clothing, leftovers from barely touched meals and a campfire still burning. A chiaroscuro of shadows and embers. I think of such little consideration and the ruined American dream. On the icy sand I find a cushion bearing an inscription: “DREAM.”
